Sometimes, at the most inconvenient of times, it is rare for a dog not to act human. Dog owners and non dog owners alike agree that pets can be almost so human in the aspect of feeling emotions, and that they are worthy of love and care. Knowledge about a dog's moods as well as its interests makes for a successful animal portrait.

If a dog does not want to have his picture taken, he would usually start barking or refusing to prick up his ears. He would choose to be stubborn and distracting. It's advisable to catch the dog's attention with a noise rather than a smell to keep him startled and still on just one pose. If a dog sniffs around, he would tilt his neck upward and ruin the lines and contours of the shot, but if the dog is slightly startled, he would stand with ears up.

The best time to get your dog's picture taken is when he is bright and alert, which happens early in the morning. Being more alert, the hungry dog's reactions would make it do the pose. The good thing about this time is that it is cool, and so the dog would not be panting from heat that would be prevalent later during the day. Unless a dog is a German Shepherd or a Saint Bernard, it would not look good as a subject, nor would a tired looking dog.

Dog photographers' studios have something in common to the studios of radio broadcasting stations. You can find any kind of sound effect there for instant use. Available sounds include mouse squeaks and duck quacks.

A breeder is expectant to see a perfect form and excellence in how his dog is featured in the proofs of the portrait. There is something that separates an artist's drawing from a photographer's portrait of a canine. In drawing, an artist does not try to capture what she knows is there but what is visible to him. When working with dogs, the other way is true, and the photographer must be able to get into the picture what should be there and not what is seen.

The length of a dachshund should be blown out of proportion. In the case of most breeds, their feet should be planted firmly on the ground and their bodies should be slight tilted for the shot. Of all the breeds, the German boxer seems to be the most sophisticated. This dog can prove to be quite hostile with other dogs around.

It is often forgotten by amateur photographers that hungry dogs are easiest to photograph. A photographer would get disappointed to see that after stuffing the dog, it would become a lazy and disinterested subject. The alert dog assumes his stance without difficulty.

Sometimes, photographers don't want the breeders to be there when the dog is being posed. Their reason behind this is that dog owners can make such a racket in quite the same way a nervous mother would. Likewise the dog is too accustomed to the tricks employed by his master in attracting his attention and is not aided by his presence. On the other hand catching their attention with various sound effects would make them give the desired reaction.
